With the New York Institute of Shadowhunters back to full capacity now that Clary has been rescued from her brother, Jonathan Morgenstern, Jace Wayland, Alec Lightwood and Luke Garroway bring everyone up to speed about how Clary’s life force is connected to Jonathan’s – meaning he cannot be harmed or killed without the same happening to Clary. Jonathan has to be brought in alive. The team knows that he is after the Morning Star Sword. If they find it, they’ll find Jonathan.

Luke enlists the help of Maryse Lightwood (Nicola Correia-Damude) to break open a Warlock safe that could point them to the location of this mysterious sword. Luke and Maryse bond over their mutual banishment from the places they have given their lives to. Maryse was convicted of being a Circle member and aiding Valentine and thereby expelled from the Shadowhunters in the previous season of the show. Luke was suspended from the police force and also left the Jade Wolf pack. It looks like these two have a lot in common.

Maia Roberts interrupts them pleading with Luke to return to the Jade Wolf. She feels the pack is falling apart under new leadership. But Luke doesn’t want to go back. His personal life will always be at the forefront, making him a poor Alpha. Instead, Luke believes Maia has the makings of a true Alpha; all she needs to do is get the rest of the pack to back her.

Given Luke’s confidence in her, Maia decides to take the first step to become Alpha by letting go of her personal attachments. Maia and Simon’s romance was on its last legs, but breaking up is still a struggle for both of them. It’s refreshing to see the erstwhile couple amicably part, remaining friends and wishing each other the best.

SHADOWHUNTERS – “Beati Bellicosi” – Jordan and the Praetor try to track down Heidi, while the Shadowhunters try to locate Jonathan. Meanwhile, Luke looks to Maryse for help and Isabelle gets a possible lead on information on what is really going on in the Clave prisons. This episode of “Shadowhunters” airs Monday, March 11 (8:00-9:01 p.m. EDT) on Freeform. (Freeform/John Medland)

Speaking of romance, after Maryse successfully breaks the code on the Warlock safe, she and Luke passionately kiss before she leaves in an awkward hurry. Well, that was unexpected!

Meanwhile, back at the Institute Jace shows Clary where he’s seen the rune that Lilith etched on to her before she died. It was in a copy of Paradis Lost which had an illustration of Michael fighting Lucifer. After Lucifer was vanquished, the mark disappeared. Just then, Clary’s hand starts burning – Jonathan is obviously trying to remind his sister that he’s going nowhere. At her wit’s end, Clary is desperate to remove the rune for good. Jace tries to laser it off but does not succeed.

Izzy’s Continuing Struggles

This should be a time to celebrate, but Izzy is already feeling the after-effects of saving Simon’s life in the previous episode of Shadowhunters. She turns to Magnus Bane for help procuring an herb that will ease her addiction cravings, but without his magic, Magnus can’t help. She powers through it to continue her investigation into rumors about Downworlders being tortured in Idris. Who better to join her than her brother Alec?

Magnus has told Alec about Izzy’s lapse into addiction. The subtext for the dialogue between Alec and Izzy closely relates to real-world struggles with addiction which makes their interaction particularly memorable.

"‘I’m here with you; every step of the way,’ – Alec tells Izzy"

Izzy’s contact on Idris, Greenlaw, is killed before he can speak to her. Distressed by the turn of events, the Lightwood siblings call Maryse for insider knowledge. It’s obvious that Greenlaw’s death was a Clave hit. Maryse doesn’t want her children involved, especially since one person has already been silenced to protect a secret program that Clave is running.

The Return of Heidi, Rogue Vampire

Praetor Jordan Kyle (Chai Hansen) is on the hunt for Heidi McKenzie (Tessa Mossey) the fledgling vampire who escaped Raphael and has gone rogue due to the torture she endured. She continues to be wily and evades his grasp, leaving one of Jordan’s wolf pack dead in this episode of Shadowhunters.

Heidi turns to Hotel Dumort, asking the remaining members of the New York clan for help, but they want nothing to do with her. With one of their own dead, now the Jade Wolf pack of werewolves, led by Russell (Noah Danby), are on high alert.

Jordan, who was in charge of protecting Simon, informs him about Heidi’s actions. Simon inadvertently created Heidi, so he feels responsible and agrees to help Jordan on his quest to bring her in. Easier said than done. Heidi tricks a mundane into sending Jordan and the rest of the Praetors to Hotel Dumort in an effort to start a fight between the two clans. While Simon helps the mundane, Jordan heads to the Jade Wolf.

The vampires infiltrate the Jade Wolf. While Maia tries to protect Jordan, who is injured in the attack, she watches as the majority of the pack – including Russell – are massacred. Maia has nowhere to run as Griffin (Romaine Waite) hammers at the door that is protecting her.
