Brooklyn Nine-Nine returns with Gintars. What is a Gintars? Would you wear clothes from the Gape? Do flies have too many eyes? We’ve got answers!

This week’s episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, “Gintars,” was written by Andy Gosche (Flowers for Norman) and directed by Linda Mendoza (black-ish). The A story is about Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio) dealing with the sudden appearance of Gintars (Ike Barinholtz). It turns out that Gintars is the biological father of Boyle’s adopted son, Nikolaj (Antonio Raul Corbo). Or, as Boyle would it, Nikolaj is Gintars’ sex result.

The B story revolves around Captain Holt (Andre Braugher) and Amy (Melissa Fumero), who have a nerd obsession with a designer scientist Dr. Ronald Yee (Reggie Lee). He is brought in to help Rosa (Stephanie Beatriz) and Terry (Terry Crews) solve a case. Dr. Yee is also brought in to help Captain Holt avoid getting permission from Commissioner Kelly to use FBI lab techs to sweep the crime scene.

Did you know that there are like 17 million mites that keep your eyebrows from becoming weighed down by oils? Dr. Yee drops this knowledge bomb to explain bugs and entomology’s role in forensic science. Terry gets grossed out and shaves his eyebrows. The resulting attempts to paint fake brows is the C story.

Porzingis!

Gintars appears out of nowhere. He’s decked out in vintage, yet futuristic looking, acid wash denim. It’s the kind of outfit that Russell Westbrook or James Harden could pull off in an NBA pregame walk-up. Gintars is following Jake (Andy Samberg) and Boyle. When the two confront him, Gintars explains that Boyle’s adopted son, Nikolaj, is his biological sex result. Boyle passes out on the concrete sidewalk.

Back at the Nine-Nine, Gintars explains that he just wants to see his sex result. He does not need him to know who he is. Boyle is hesitant because that could rattle Nikolaj’s emotions. Gintars is resolute. He will sit and watch episodes of Mad About You on his phone. Gintars warns Jake and Boyle how long he will wait when he reminds them that Mad About You has many episodes. Indeed. There were 164 Mad About You episodes over 7 seasons. Plus, there’s the upcoming revival. Man, alive!

Jake works out a deal where Gintars will meet Nikolaj, but not reveal who he is. Gintars assumes the name of Billy Hanukkah from the Bronx because, as Jake astutely asserts, kids don’t know when names are dumb until later. At the first whiff of his son’s scent, Gintars introduces himself to Nikolaj as his biological father.

As Gintars and Nikolaj play basketball in the background, Rushmore style, Boyle tells Jake that he fears he will lose his son. Jake takes this to heart and decides to have Gintars deported. That’s harsh and something that likely happens far too often in the real world. Jake decides to achieve this by getting Gintars to admit that his business empire is copyright infringement and fraud. Gintars has a clothing line that is an exact copy of the Gap. Except this line is called the Gape.

Jake meets Gintars at a bathhouse. He’s wearing a wire under his towel. Gintars takes his towel off and man spreads while asserting this is the only way to hold a proper business meeting. Jake can’t reveal his wired-for-sound package, so he goes with a story that his junk is severely mutilated.

Gintars takes pity on Jake and gives him some Gape swag. He also admits that the Gape is a rip off of the Gap. The cops bust in and arrest Gintars. Nikolaj gets to spend a few hours with his biological father before he is deported. Boyle is upset with Jake because his plan upset Nikolaj more than just having Gintars around would have. The two make up, but for once, Boyle has real boundaries. It’s not surprising that they’re for the good of his family.

Bug Have too many Eyes

Captain Holt and Amy treat Dr. Yee as the second coming of Gil Grissom (William Petersen). Dr. Yee has specially trained flies that react only to blood. If there is blood at Rosa’ crime scene, the bugs will detect it. This grosses Terry out and aggravates Rosa who just wants to call in the FBI.

Dr. Yee performs a demonstration where all of his flies flock to blood. When they do not flock to anything at the crime scene, Captain Holt and Amy declare there was no crime committed there. Rosa performs a demonstration of her own. She uses the blood of Hitchcock (Dirk Blocker), who just happens to be bleeding, to prove that the flies are not attracted to blood.

When Rosa calls out Dr. Yee, Captain Holt wants to fire her. But, Dr. Yee admits that he uses popsicles to attract the flies in his demonstrations. He used to use jam, but that’s too expensive. That is a true statement. Still, when you have to rely on Walgreens popsicles to prove your scientific theory, you have to question your life choices. I mean, the purple popsicles taste like purple. Not because that’s what we said when we were kids. Because they taste like you’re eating a purple crayon.

Rosa does use the pseudo-science to make her suspect think they have evidence on him. Pushed into a corner, the perp confesses. Rosa is happy. Captain Holt and Amy insist Dr. Yee still solved the case. Rosa is once again aggravated.

Terry’s eyebrows change as often as Rosa’s hairstyles in “The Crime Scene.” You really just have to check them out in the episode. They’re something to behold.
