Hulu’s Castle Rock: Huge, exciting casting details about season 2!
By Wade Wainio
Hulu’s Castle Rock was full of strange surprises, and season 2 has some big-name stars and familiar characters to keep the ball rolling.
Fans curious about Castle Rock‘s 2nd season have a few hints at what will happen on the J.J. Abrams and Stephen King. What kind of stars will it have? According to Deadline, Tim Robbins will be in season 2! Robbins is known for appearing in plenty of films and received an Oscar nomination for directing Dead Man Walking. Most recently he’s appeared in HBO’s Here and Now series. Of course, Stephen King fans will recognize him as star ofThe Shawshank Redemption prison drama.
In other words, Robbins already has some links to the Stephen King creative universe, much like season one’s Bill Skarsgård (who also plays as Pennywise the Clown in It: Chapter One and the upcoming It: Chapter Two). Now he’ll have a chance to grow his psychological horror cred (aside from his role in the freaky film Jacob’s Ladder). Specifically, Robbins is starring as Reginald “Pop” Merrill. Deadline describes the character like this: “The Patriarch of Stephen King’s iconic crime family, Pop is dying of cancer and at reckoning with his family.”

Garrett Hedlund will also star in season 2. Hedlund has appeared in such films as On the Road, Inside Llewyn Davis, Pan, Mudbound and Triple Frontier. On Castle Rock Hedlund will play as John “Ace” Merril. If that name sounds familiar, it could be that you’ve seen Stand By Me, the classic coming-of-age tale directed by Rob Reiner (and one of Stephen King’s own favorite film adaptations). In Stand By Me, Ace was played by Kiefer Sutherland. It should definitely be interesting to see what the character’s been up to since his infamous standoff with Gordie LaChance.
Want an even bigger shock? Lizzy Caplan (star of Masters of Sex) will appear as Annie Wilkes, the crazed nurse from Misery! An interesting question: How maniacal will her character be in Castle Rock? There’s a suggestion that this is a younger Annie Wilkes, and possibly not yet as twisted as the film version (or especially the novel’s). How will Caplan do as Annie? We’ll all just have to wait. Keep in mind, Wilkes was previously played by Kathy Bates, who won the 1990 Academy Award for Best Actress for the role! Caplan did receive an Emmy nomination for Masters of Sex, but the iconic Annie Wilkes could still be a challenging role. Interestingly, Elsie Fisher will play Annie’s home-schooled daughter.
In addition to these new characters, we’ll also see Yusra Warsama as Dr. Nadia Omar, a Somali medical director of a rural hospital in Jerusalem’s Lot. Warsama is known for The Last Days on Mars, Assassin’s Creed: Origins and My Brother the Devil. Barkhad Abdi will play Nadia’s older brother. Abdi is known for roles in Captain Phillips, Eye in the Sky and Blade Runner 2049. Matthew Alan will appear as Pop’s nephew and Ace’s brother, Chris. Alan is perhaps best known for appearing in Netflix series 13 Reasons Why.
This season has a lot of potential, even though one wonders how it will blend with previous events in Castle Rock. Either way, the chance to see Annie Wilkes, or even Ace, will be too much for many King fans to resist. Basically, this is guaranteed to win the series additional viewers, and further cement Castle Rock‘s place in Hulu’s lineup.
