Is Y: The Last Man officially dead at FX?

In a shocking move, Aida Croal and Michael Green officially announced they would be exiting the highly anticipated Y: The Last Man adaptation at FX. With their departure, the future suddenly seems very uncertain for the series. Hollywood Reporter has said the network is dedicated to finding new showrunners while other outlets like io9 are saying the show is officially dead.

Aida Croal took to Twitter to release a statement on both her’s and Green’s behalf.

The opening line does make it seem like the show will at the very least be creatively retooled by the network before airing. However, it’s unclear what FX didn’t like about what part of Croal’s and Green’s vision for Y: The Last Man.

Meanwhile, THR is reporting that FX is planning to move forward on the show without the two. The network plans to keep the current cast in place as it searches for new showrunners. Considering Y: The Last Man has been a comic book adaptation which fans have been desperate to see, it seems unlikely the network would just want to pull the cord without even trying to make it work.

As scripted programming becomes more ambitious, it seems like it’s becoming more common for showrunners to exit over creative differences. Green made headlines earlier for his high-profile departure from Starz’s American Gods alongside Bryan Fuller.

While there’s been no official statement from FX or the cast, one half of the creative team behind the Y: The Last Man comics did reply to a fan on Twitter saying the series isn’t officially canceled yet.
