Warrior: Cinemax renews action series for season 2
Warrior fans have another season to look forward to!
Cinemax is in the process of building up its original content and it looks like the network may have found its latest hit. Deadline reports the half action-series and half period drama, Warrior, has earned an early season 2 renewal despite only airing three episodes.
The series was created by Justin Lin (famously known for the Fast & Furious franchise) and Jonathan Tropper, who was one of the minds behind the network’s other hit Banshee. It was inspired by the legendary martial artist, Bruce Lee, and his writings.
According to Deadline, the renewal has been unofficial for months but Cinemax has finally confirmed that the show will be returning. In fact, pre-production for season 2 actually began earlier this year in South Africa. Hopefully, this signals the show won’t be on a long hiatus after its freshman run wraps up.
Warrior follows Ah Sahm (Andrew Koji) after he mysteriously emigrates from China to San Francisco. He’s considered a martial arts prodigy and is quickly recruited to serve as a “hatchet man” to Hope Wei. The series takes place during the notorious Tong Wars, which was a period in the late 1870s and early 1880s where the rival Tongs (the organized Chinese crime families) were feuding.
While Warrior hasn’t gotten that much attention in its first season, it seems inevitable that positive word of mouth will help the show grow. The critical reviews have been solid and Bruce Lee’s daughter, Shannon Lee, has been a huge factor in the series finally coming to fruition.
Warrior airs every Friday night at 10 PM EST on Cinemax.
