What/If: Netflix releases a trailer for the upcoming anthology series
By Luke Lucas
Netflix set the premiere date for What/If. The series follows socially conscious people who do socially unacceptable things. We’ve got the details!
What if someone made you an offer you couldn’t refuse? This isn’t a Godfather-inspired gun-to-your-head deal. This is an extraordinary deal where the players are pre-arranged. You’re playing for anything or anyone that you want. What would you risk? This is what Renée Zellweger asks in the trailer for Netflix’s What/If.
The show, set to premiere on May 24, looks like a mix of Indecent Proposal plus The Game (1997). There is a surplus of sly smiling and side-eye in the trailer. It looks like there will be profound consequences if you try to back out of the deal.
According to Deadline, the show will focus on good people doing bad things. That sounds like burning a lot of bridges to walk the path of the bold and the beautiful. It’s hard to go back to your old life once you leave it. It’s a sexy existential crisis.
What/If stars Zellweger (Bridget Jones’s Baby), Jane Levy (Evil Dead), Blake Jenner (American Animals), Dave Annable (Yellowstone), and Louis Herthum (Westworld). It was written by Mike Kelly (Revenge) and directed by Phillip Noyce (The Resident). Robert Zemeckis is among the producers of the ten episode series.
It’ll be interesting to see where the show goes. There’s a lot of chess playing eluded to in the trailer. The title looks like a line item from a form. Fill in what you want. Fill in what you’ll do to get it. And, from the looks of things, sign the contract with blood. Also, the deal for your soul seems to just get you a place in the game. Once there, you’ve got a whole lot of work ahead of you. We’re just not sure what that work is right now.
