HBO’s Perry Mason is giving us John Lithgow, Matthew Rhys, AND Tatiana Maslany?!

Perry Mason is giving us a very early Christmas present with its all-star cast. According to Deadline, joining Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany and The Americans’ Matthew Rhys is John Lithgow. I told you it’s an epic cast! This HBO limited series comes from Team Downey, Robert and Susan Downey along with executive producers Amanda Burrell and Joe Horaceck.

So what is Perry Mason about? And who is John Lithgow playing? Well, the series takes place in Los Angeles circa 1932 in a post-Depression era. While the rest of the United States is trying to get back on its feet, Los Angeles seems to be doing rather well. They have the Olympics, oil, not to mention movies, well, talking pictures if we’re being historically accurate. Unfortunately, a child is kidnapped, and things go very wrong, very fast in the world of Perry Mason.

The series is based on author Erle Stanley Gardner’s characters and follows Rhys’ character, Perry Mason–a famous criminal defense lawyer. Yes, Rhys as a lawyer?! I’m so here for it. When Mason is presented with a groundbreaking case, his life and the city of Los Angeles will change forever.

Lithgow will be playing a character by the name of Elias Birchard “E.B.” Jonathan–a personal attorney and an on-again-off-again investigator employed by Perry Mason. He too will find himself involved in a life-changing investigation that coincides with one the LAPD is conducting.
