Chernobyl was definitely a big hit for HBO and will be getting some further attention with its Emmy nominations.

HBO has been playing many cards right lately if Emmy nominations are any indication. In addition to hit shows like Game of Thrones and SuccessionChernobyl is receiving 19 nominations! Praised by critics and watched by millions, Chernobyl is up for the Best Limited Series award.

Jared Harris stands to possibly win the”Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie” award, for his depiction of Valery Legasov — the man in charge of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster cleanup efforts. Other nominations are for Emily Watson (Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie) and Stellan Skarsgård (Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie).

In addition to this, Deadline notes that Chernobyl has nominations in “casting, directing, production design, hairstyling, makeup, and prosthetic makeup, writing, cinematography and a raft of other craft nods.” This makes it the 3rd most nominated show (Game of Thrones wins that battle, with a lofty 32 nominations!).

Although Chernobyl is fictionalized and doesn’t convey the disaster with 100% accuracy, it nevertheless captures some of the essential components of the story. It also often comes across as dark and sinister in tone, due to the cinematic techniques employed and some great (sometimes subtle) special effects.

In addition to memorable performances, the disaster itself seems like a character in Chernobyl, being just as crucial as any of the character’s reactions. Although a second season is highly unlikely, this limited series is certainly one to be remembered, and will likely serve as a template for future cinematic limited series in the future.  Will it win every award it’s able to?  Possibly not, but it seems virtually guaranteed to win at least a few.
