Veronica Mars character refresher: Who’s returning to Neptune for the revival?
Cindy “Mac” Mackenzie
Unfortunately, Mac is confirmed not to be returning for the revival but if the show gets another season then we really hope she finds her way back to Neptune. The last we heard, Mac was quitting her job at Kane Software, where she was pulling in a lot of cash, for a less glamorous but more fulfilling job at Mars Investigations.
Since she’s jokingly been called the “Q” to Veronica’s Bond, it sounds like the Mars family might run into trouble without an expert hacker around. Unless she’s switched jobs, the easiest way to explain her absence is to just say Mac is taking a vacation over springbreak. Maybe she’s camping with her family, it would be a nice callback to the original series without needing to dive much further into it.
Lianne Reynolds
No one has mentioned whether Veronica’s mother will return but even if she did we can’t imagine it’ll be for more than a couple of scenes. Veronica Mars has never had Lianne be a stable presence in Veronica’s or Keith’s lives. In fact, her mother’s affair with Jake Kane caused the family a lot of emotional turmoil with the two horrified that they might not actually be related. Thankfully, Keith got a DNA test which confirmed that Veronica was 100% his daughter but it was still a terrible situation to be in.
Not to mention, Veronica used her college fund to pay for her mother’s rehab, which she then skipped out on. When she leaves Neptune again, Lianne takes the money that Keith earned for tracking down Woody Goodman leaving Veronica hurt again.
*Technically, there are Veronica Mars books which are canon however I have never read them. Allegedly, Lianne remarried a man named Tanner Scott and had a son named Hunter. It’s unclear if this will be brought up in the show at all or if it will be retconned.
