Hulu’s Looking for Alaska gets its first teaser trailer!

John Green’s beloved novel, Looking for Alaska, has had a long journey but will finally be getting the television treatment. The rights to the book were sold a while ago and it seemed like it readers would never get to see the story play out on screen. Thankfully, Hulu’s series will be out this fall and the streaming service has released a new teaser trailer in anticipation.

Looking for Alaska is about teenager Miles (known as Pudge despite being described as incredibly skinny) Halter and his adventures at boarding school. Miles is notably obsessed and intrigued with famous people’s final words. However he falls deeply in love with a fellow enigmatic student, Alaska Young, who introduces him to a whole new world.

At school he also meets a group of deeply loyal friends where he has plenty of new experiences. Unfortunately, a tragedy changes both Miles’ and his friends’ lives that will change them forever.

The novel has been considered largely influential in modern day literature for teens and young adults who relate to the themes throughout the story. However, it’s always been a source of controversy in schools with parents upset with the “mature” themes. Green has responded to the criticism, defending some of the more graphic scenes and has pointed out that the book can’t be judged based on specific moments but how those moments tie together the overrall story.

Charlie Plummer plays the lead, Miles, while Kristine Froseth (Netflix’s The Society) is Alaska. They’re also joined by Denny Love, Jay Lee, Sofia Vassilieva, Landry Bender, Uriah Shelton, Jordan Connor, Timothy Simons, and Ron Cephas Jones.

Looking for Alaska was created by Josh Schwartz (Gossip Girl) for Hulu and has been a major champion alongside Green for the adaptation. At the TCA, he told fans that the eight episodes will be extremely faithful to the novel.

"“We’re incredibly faithful to the material but we’ve also taken great efforts to go further and deeper. For fans of the book, they will feel we’ve really honored the material."

He also spoke about fleshing out Alaska’s character more than the book did. It’s understandable because Alaska is always seen through Miles’ eyes which means the audience gets a limited understanding about who she is. However, Schwartz said she will exist more than to just be “a mystery” for Miles.

"The book is really about the limited male gaze and we wanted to make sure that Alaska exists in her own right. The audience will have understanding of her character and she won’t exist only as a mystery, hopefully that will go some way to remedy that.”"

Froseth, who plays Alaska, added in that her character will have plenty of moments to shine on her own.

"“We made sure she felt human, a regular teenager and added in a lot of private moments that help show that.”"
