Orange Is the New Black season 7, episode 8 recap: Baker’s Dozen

Orange is the New Black helps Taystee turn a new leaf in the wake of an uplifting conversation that changes her mindset.
Orange is the New Black is trotting along in what is quite possibly its best season yet. And in this episode, we finally get some much-needed positivity and optimism from Taystee who has been struggling during the season. After speaking with Ward, Taystee finally sees some light at the end of the tunnel. However, she does manage to finally get the laced heroin from Daya that would assist her in ending her life as she had initially wanted.
There are a lot of changes going on at Litchfield thanks to Ward, but unfortunately, the superiors are not so eager to help the inmates as she is. So when the plan to get Tiffany a GED tutor fails, Ward asks Taystee to step in. It makes me happy to see glimpses of the old Taystee again, eager to help others in need.
And while we’re mentioning Daya, I have to point out that it’s a bummer to see Aleida back in prison. She really messed up her second chance at life and after beating up her daughter’s boyfriend, she’s back roaming the halls of Litchfield, fighting with Daya. Of course, Daya is nothing like she was when Aleida first left prison so their interaction is incredibly frustrating.
Outside the walls of Litchfield, Piper is trying to make new friends as she heads out on a wilderness retreat. She ends up connecting with a woman named Zelda here, although nothing happens between them, at least not yet. Something tells me that is going to change as we get closer to the end of the season, but let’s see. Maybe Piper and Alex can make it against all odds. But the fact that Alex is hooking up with McCullough isn’t a great sign.
I’m saddened to report that Red is starting to lose more and more of her memory. It’s so tough to see her break down in this manner and to see Nicky try and help her in any way she can. She’s been such a maternal figure during Orange is the New Black and such a beloved character. I hate to see this happen to her, but it’s what makes this series special.
It’s raw. It’s real. It’s the truth.
