The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance season 1 premiere recap: End. Begin. All the Same.
Deet & the Sanctuary Tree
Finally, there’s Deet (Nathalie Emmanuel), the animal-loving Gelfling from Grottan. She gleefully flies throughout the forrest offering kindness to anyone she passes. However, her typical route is interrupted by one of the babies she’s feeding. It bites her in a rage, and its mother returns to attack even more violently. Confused and injursed, she ducks into a nearby cave to lick her wounds.
However, when she emerges, she comes across the Sanctuary Tree in all of its glory. She’s a bit confused since her last run-in with the tree was during her childhood. However, the tree speaks this time to reveal she is still a child but now she has a job to do. It offers her knowledge of “the darkening” and a prophetic vision of all the evils which are to come.
Deet awakens next back home before Maudra Argot (Louise Gold) arrives to check on her. Otherwise known as “The Shadow Bender”, Maudra Argot is the leader of the Grottan Clan. When she hears of Deet’s story, she tells her this is her new destiny and to follow the brightest star to Ha’rar. Deet has never ventured out of the forrest to see the sky, and she’s captivated once she’s lifted abover the tree to start her journey.
A Rebellion is Rising
While Brea, Rian, and Deet haven’t met yet, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is setting up these three to lead the rebellion. Rian will want justice, Brea wants equality, and Deet to stop the dark path for Thra. The premiere is long but it does manage to give us a feel for the three leads as well as many of the supporting characters.
The hour is also a showcase for just how beautiful practical effects can be. The love and care that went into the puppets and the scenery are prevalent in every single scene. Fans of the movie will definitely be proud to see how Jim Henson’s vision has been kept alive.
