They go to one of the houses, Rip walks in as Beth watches from the doorway. Rip’s deeply moved. As they sit on the front stoop he asks Beth to read the end of the letter again. He observes that John referred to him as his son. It’s an incredibly meaningful gesture to Rip.

Rainwater’s head of security drives up to the main house. John and a posse start preparing to go after the militia that has Tate. John instructs Kayce to get Rip. When he finds him, Kayce asks Rip to help them by drawing the militia’s fire and helping them determine how many people they have to fight. Despite the obvious danger, Rip agrees.

That night everyone suits up in livestock agent uniforms. They approach the militia’s compound. As Rip mounts his horse, John rides up next to him. John apologizes to Rip for having to ask him to do this on this particular day. But Rip says he can’t think of a better day for it. John nods and tells him he’ll be covering him on his right.

Everyone else gets into place . Rip exhales, looks up and says “I love you,” and then rides into the militia’s territory. Guns immediately start firing on him. The rest of the group  springs into action behind him firing and shouting “livestock police,” but the militia doesn’t stop shooting.

They manage to take out and arrest the men on the exterior of the militia’s house. Then Kayce and Rainwater’s security guard open the front door. Gunfire erupts from within but they’re ready for it. They take the shooter out. The rest of the people in the house are arrested peacefully. Then Kayce encounters the head of the militia who appears to be meditating. Kayce asks him where his son is. The man doesn’t answer at first but when Kayce questions him again. The man says he knows Tate’s location and then kills himself.

Outside, Malcolm goes after John. They shoot at each other but it’s John’s bullet that connects, injuring Malcolm. Malcolm drops to the ground but quickly gets up. John shoots him again and this time Malcolm’s down for good. John walks up to a seriously injured Malcolm and shoots him once more. Malcolm screams in pain and curses him out. John tells Malcolm that if gives him Tate’s location they’ll get him to a hospital.

Malcolm still refuses to respond. As the rest of the group looks on, John sits down next to Malcolm and informs him it’s his last chance to do something that might get him into heaven. He then questions what Malcolm wants to be thinking about when he dies.

Malcolm finally tells John where Tate is. John says he’ll get a chopper to take him to the hospital but Malcolm acknowledges he won’t make it. John asks if Malcolm wants company when he dies. Malcolm chooses to be alone. Then he tells John he wishes they’d never met.

The Sheriff along with Kayce go to the location Malcolm gave them. They break in to find a group of unsuspecting white supremacists. They take them out and find Tate in a bathroom. The Sheriff tries to hold Kayce back from going to a traumatized Tate. Kayce pushes past him and approaches his son whose head has been shaved.

Tate screams and fights Kayce until he finally looks at who it is. Then he calms down.

At the ranch, John informs Monica that her son is safe.

Later, Beth walks across the property to Rip. She observes that they’re going to lose the ranch. She says she can’t wait. She asks what he’ll do. Rip tells her he’ll probably just do what he’s doing there, but somewhere else. He asks her what she’ll do. Beth claims she plans to sleep for a year. Rip laughs. As he walks away, he implies he’ll be available if she wants company.

John emerges from the main house sobbing. Beth looks back at him and then walks away.
