The Handmaid’s Tale: A series follow-up in the works at Hulu

Under his eye, The Handmaid’s Tale to get a series follow-up based on Margaret Atwood’s upcoming sequel novel.

The Handmaid’s Tale has changed the world ever since it first premiered with its ghastly, devastating look at a grim dystopian future. Instead of technological advances, female rights have been stripped away in this world and their worth reduced to almost nothing. It’s quite the depressing series to watch, but yet, many have been drawn to it nonetheless.

Season 3 just ended on Hulu earlier this summer and there has already been a season 4 renewal–this story is not going anywhere just yet. And with that sentiment in mind, we’d like to inform you that Deadline has reported that another series is in the works.

This second series would be a follow-up to The Handmaid’s Tale and be based on author Margaret Atwood’s upcoming sequel novel, The Testaments. This novel releases Sept. 10th, and as we can see, ahead of its release, it has managed to snag interest with Hulu and MGM Television. Showrunner Bruce Miller is very much interested in using this potential second series as a way to extend the story beyond what we’ve seen in three seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale.

I would hope that the second novel/series would be more optimistic and about how Offred took over the world and crushed Gilead under her badassness. I don’t think I can handle any more sad stuff if I’m being honest.

According to DeadlineThe Testaments novel will begin about fifteen years after wherever we leave Offred at the very end of The Handmaid’s Tale novel. The narration will be three female characters, which makes me wonder if two of those characters could be Offred/June’s daughters, Hannah and Nicole–wouldn’t that be something?

I’m definitely intrigued by how this story will continue and wonder what this would mean for the current series. Could The Handmaid’s Tale be ending soon? I think that the timing would make sense at some point so the sequel could step in and take over.

Time will tell, I suppose.
