More Game of Thrones prequels (maybe) coming!

HBO is inching closer to ordering yet another pilot from Game of Thrones creator and executive producer George R. R. Martin. The prequel will be set more than 300 years before the smash hit fantasy series took place.

While HBO hasn’t officially announced anything, Deadline is reporting that the show will be based on Martin’s Fire & Blood book, centering around the Targaryens and showing the beginning of their decline of power.

Deadline also clarifies that this series is not an additional prequel to the five commissioned by HBO in 2017. This series will be a “brand new take” on one of them.

You may have caught some of Martin’s “hints” over the past year or so. In May, he wrote,

"“We have had five different Game of Thrones successor shows in development at HBO, and three of them are still moving forward nicely. Two other shows remain in the script stage but are edging closer. What are they about? I cannot say. But maybe some of you should pick up a copy of Fire & Blood and come up with your own theories.”"

The novel begins with Aegon the Conqueror and highlights the creation of the Iron Throne, and ends with the Dance of Dragons, a civil war that almost destroyed the Targaryens.

So, there you go. You have plenty of time to read Fire & Blood if you haven’t already and you’ll be prepared for the series whenever it comes to air. Honestly, we’re probably a good year or two out because the network hasn’t even announced anything.

Plus, HBO is busy shooting its green-lit Blood Moon, the Game of Thrones prequel set 5,000 years before the original Game of Thrones series. It will star Naomi Watts and Jamie Campbell Bower. Filming of the pilot began in June of this year and it should be ready to air next year.
