Spoonbenders: Showtime gives pilot production order for new drama
Spoonbenders is one step closer to landing at Showtime.
The hit novel might finally hit television soon! According to Deadline, Showtime won a major bidding war to order a pilot production commitment for Spoonbenders. The adaptation hails from the creator of FX’s You’re the Worst and Berlanti Productions.
Based on the book by Daryl Gregory, Spoonbenders follows a family of magicians with a dark secret. It turns out their “traveling act” isn’t much of an act at all. Every member has actual powers and abilities however they come with a price. Twenty-five years later, their past catches up with them and antagonists like the mob, the government, and even some old debts will resurface. The novel is considered “genre-busting” which means there will probably be a lot of humor and heartbreak.
The pilot is set to be written by Stephen Falk (You’re the Worst) and he’s also onboard to serve as an executive producer. His FX series is one of the most underrated but critically adored shows in recent history. Undoubtedly, he’ll be able the perfect writer to helm the pilot. Meanwhile, Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter of Berlanti Productions are also expected to executive produce.
Berlanti Prods. set the record earlier this year for number of shows on the air at a time, however, this would be the first to hit a premium network. The series that are currently airing or set to air this year are All American, Arrow, Batwoman, Black Lightning, Blindspot, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Doom Patrol, The Flash, God Friended Me, Legends of Tomorrow, Prodigal Son, Riverdale, Stargirl, Supergirl, Titans and You.
