Cast additions including Molly Gordon, Rob Morgan, Spencer Garrett, Kirk Bovill, and Delante Desouza have bolstered ‘untitled Showtime Lakers project’.

Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s is the book that new HBO drama, currently known as ‘the untitled Showtime Lakers project’, is based on. And is written for the small screen by the man who developed Godzilla for the silver screen.

Naturally, basketball will feature heavily in this sports-inspired show, but it’s the acutely interesting off-field incidents, relationships, and happenings which will be a huge focus when the production completes for air sometime in 2020.

Ervin “Magic” Johnson will be a large part of the program, as he was in the nonfiction piece that inspired Jeff Pearlman’s account. He and his father are a strong part, with Johnson’s early career and home life in focus.

Another element is the interrelationships and dynamic between owner Jerry Buss as well and his daughter Jeanie. Along with Linda Zafrani in the forum office.

Legendary announcer Chick Hearn, who, according to Deadline: “coined terms essential to basketball’s lexicon—including slam dunk, airball, and no-look pass”, is a big part, too. That will surely be an incredible aspect, yet possibly not as explosive and controversial a character as former manager Donald Sterling.

Before the Michael “Air” Jordan era, Lakers dominated the NBA’s championship. Though Chicago took precedence as the Los Angeles side dwindled.
