11 Netflix originals to binge in October
Big Mouth: Season 3 – October 4
Big Mouth is a wild, grotesque, hilarious, and often poignant adult cartoon about the trials and traumas of going through puberty. The Netflix series was created by Nick Kroll, Andrew Goldberg, Mark Levin, and Jennifer Flackett and based on Kroll and Goldberg’s coming of age experiences. One can assume that they didn’t actually interact with literal hormone monsters, but you get the idea.
Nick Kroll voices his fictional younger self alongside an amazing voice cast which includes John Mulaney, Jenny Slate, Fred Armisen, Maya Rudolph, Jordan Peele, Kristen Wiig, and Jon Hamm. The series has already been renewed through season six, so we have plenty more awkward moments and startling revelations to look forward to in the next couple of years. And its not surprising, given the popularity of some other Netflix originals in the adult animation genre. Big Mouth fits right in with shows like Bojack Horseman, Tuca & Bertie, and F is for Family.
Peaky Blinders: Season 5 – October 4
The popular period crime drama is back for season five on Netflix as Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) – leader of the Peaky Blinders gang – has been elected as a member of parliament. The show is based on a real-life gang that was active in Birmingham, England between World War I and World War II. Writer and creator Steven Knight (Eastern Promises) says that the series is planned to run up to the first air raid siren of World War II in Birmingham.
That’s in 1940 and season five opens in 1929. According to Knight’s timeline, the series still needs two more seasons to get to that point. BBC has yet to officially commission season six, but Knight says they’re definitely doing it. If all goes well, we can look forward to more Peaky Blinders up to season seven. According to first reports, this season is the most-watched in the show’s history, so there’s no reason to think it won’t get renewed indefinitely.
