STARZ is in the early stages of developing a spinoff of 2018’s Blindspotting. Who will reprise their roles in the new series? We’ve got details!

Per a report from Deadline, STARZ is developing a spinoff of 2018’s Blindspotting. Written by Rafael Casal (Bad Education) and Daveed Diggs (Undone), Blindspotting follows the relationship between Miles (Casal) and Collin (Diggs).

During the last three days of his probation, Collin witnesses a police shooting. That, plus the gentrification of his native Oakland and his best friend’s erratic behavior, fuels the movie. The Lionsgate production earned $4,976,949 worldwide per Box Office Mojo and holds a 94% critic rating on over 160 reviews and an 86% audience score on over 2,100 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

Lionsgate owns STARZ, which is having trouble premiering original shows that last longer than two seasons. This may signal a switch away from genre-specific shows like Ash vs. Evil Dead, Counterpart, and the ratings darling Outlander to more grounded, topical content. It’s a good move.

Blindspotting offers STARZ to be a part of ongoing social discussions about race, gentrification, and appropriation in a property that’s established and has a following. Hopefully, it will appeal to the audience that STARZ COO Jeffery Hirsch covets. Based on interviews that he gave around the time of the Television Critics of America Summer Press Tour for 2019, he may not be sure what audience that is. I hope he gets this right.

So far, the only returning cast member mentioned in the Deadline report is Jasmine Cephas Jones (Midnight, Texas). She played Ashley, Miles’ wife of 12 years, in the movie. In the television adaptation, Miles is incarcerated. That leaves Ashley to raise their son on her own in a changing neighborhood that she has trouble recognizing. Blindspotting will be written and executive produced by Casal and Diggs. So, the show is off in safe hands.

Blindspotting is in early development, but it will probably premiere at some point in the second half of 2020 on STARZ. We’ll keep you updated.
