Rydell High: Grease spinoff series ordered by HBO Max

Rydell High is headed to HBO Max!

The upcoming streaming service has officially given a series order to a new Grease spinoff, titled Rydell High. While it sounds like Danny and Sandy won’t be the center of the story, the show will still be set in the 1950s.

Viewers will not only get to travel back to the infamous high school, but the series will also still be a musical. It’s unclear if the show plans to use songs from the original soundtrack or if it will be entirely new. However, it sounds a bit like Glee if the series was partially a period piece. According to HBO Max, the series will deal with multiple coming-of-age themes like peer pressure, puberty, and growing up.

Based on the description, the show is going to be entirely focused on a new set of characters. It’s unclear if Danny, Sandy, and the rest of the original cast will be recast and in supporting roles or now. However, considering the Pink Ladies and the T-Birds are such an iconic part of the original film it would be weird if no one was mentioned.

The head of original content for HBO Max, Sarah Aubrey, teased the upcoming series in her statement to Deadline.

"“This is high school and life in small-town USA told on the scale of a big rock’n’roll musical. It’s Grease 2.0 but with the same spirit, energy, and excitement you immediately think of when you hear any of these iconic songs. You’re the One That I Want!”"

There is no news on who will be cast or the writing and directing team yet. Both Picturestart and Temple Hill are on board as executive producers while Paramount Television joins Picturestart as a production team. All three of them are currently working together on a Grease prequel film.
