American Son could be rare gem to translate from Broadway to small screen
By Kareem Gantt
Netflix has released a featurette of the upcoming American Son, giving us a look behind the scenes at what could be the next Netflix gem.
Rarely has a featurette unpacked so much raw emotion as the one released for the upcoming American Son.
Starting Kerry Washington — who also serves as an executive producer — the drama tells the story of an estranged mixed-race couple who reunites to try to find their missing son, and along the way, they begin to unpack some disturbing events within a South Florida police station.
The featurette for American Son shows Washington, Steven Pasquale, and director Kenny Leon discussing the many ways that American Son relates on a powerful level to parents and individuals who deal every day with unconscious bias and race relations, and along with the interview of the main cast and director, the featurette also gives us an uncanny view of the emotional terror wrought on the couple who are trying to find answers as to what happened to their son.
It’s a quite gripping featurette, one that gives us a glimpse into what could be the next Netflix gem, and a rare film that makes a successful transition from Broadway to the small screen. The play version of American Son has won over critical acclaim, and it was really only a matter of time before the play was adapted into a movie.
The one question on my mind has been whether or not the emotional rawness that has made the play version of American Son so fascinating could be translated into a Netflix movie. Judging from the featurette, it appears that Leon has done this and then some, which deserves praise as it’s not easy to adapt a Broadway play into the small screen.
Check out the featurette for American Son, and look for the film to be available for streaming November 1.
