9-1-1 season 3, episode 5 recap: Rage
By Ariba Bhuvad
9-1-1 focuses on a frightening police-related situation for Athena’s family shedding light on a very important topic.
9-1-1, in particular, creator Ryan Murphy, has focused on a handful of important social topics, but “Rage” sets a prime example of one. Athena’s ex-husband and two kids are pulled over by a white cop, and are subject to some inappropriate treatment despite not doing anything wrong. It’s a frightening situation for the kids, especially after one of the cops pulls a gun on Athena’s son, Harry, while May films it all on her phone.
Considering Athena has a solid reputation in the force, it doesn’t bode well for the officers involved. And why should it? With no prominent danger, they used brutal force for absolutely no reason. But that’s a conversation for another day.
And because Athena is a badass, she made sure to confront the officer who pulled the gun on her son to give him a taste of his own medicine. Well, not quite the same message, but enough to get the point across. Kudos to 9-1-1 for tackling this topic in a very effective and jarring manner.
I think the hardest part of this episode is watching Michael sit down with Harry to tell him how to conduct himself around police officers. Simply because of the color of his skin, Michael warns him there is a way to behave that will hopefully keep him safe and protected. It’s a sad conversation to have, but one worth having.

In other parts of 9-1-1, Buck officially came back to the force as a result of the city not wanting to be sued and dealing with a lawsuit. It’s not going to be an easy return for him, so we’ll have to see how that plays out over the next couple of episodes.
It’s not a shocker but Eddie has some anger issues, and not many outlets to express them through–until now. During this episode, Lena takes Eddie to an underground fight club, and it’s pretty much game over from the minute Eddie sees it. I’m not sure this is going to end well for him, but for now, he’s got a place to release the stress.
Until the next one, folks!
9-1-1 airs every Monday on Fox at 8 PM EST!
