Mr. Robot season 4, episode 5 recap: Method Not Allowed
By Ariba Bhuvad
Ever watched an episode of television with barely any dialogue? Mr. Robot fans have.
Mr. Robot pulled off one hell of an episode last week, and I’m still trying to wrap my head around it. Somehow, the series managed to pull off a stressful episode with barely any dialogue between the characters. I was floored with how they pulled it off and managed to keep us engaged from start to finish.
We pick up right where we left off with Darlene picking up Elliot after the whole Dark Army van debacle. There’s not much time to relax or talk because the brother/sister duo has another task at hand. They need to break into a building and get into the servers, but that’s easier said than done. It requires a fake ID, wigs, and Elliot’s hacking skills which come into handy as he freezes the security system long enough to get the job done.
The craziest part? Darlene and Elliot get the security guard’s fingerprint, make a copy of it, and use it to do whatever they need to do. There’s one thing they didn’t account for–the guard would figure out someone used his credentials to get in and it would tip him off.
There’s a very riveting scene as the guards start to close in on Elliot and Darlene as they do their hacking. It teeter-totters between silence, darkness, and drama, and it left me biting my nails down to nothing. Even the manner in which they escape is epic and a genius plan if I’ve ever heard one.

While Elliot distracted the authorities by running out the front door, Darlene managed to get out hiding in plain sight. You see, for some reason, in this building there is also a gym. So as you can guess, it was very easy for Darlene to slip out as someone who just finished at the gym. These darn clever siblings, I’m sure going to miss them.
Darlene may have slipped out, however, Elliot is very much still trying to get away from the cops which takes us on a journey through New York City. And just when we thought it was game over for Elliot, he jumps off a bridge and lands on the ground below–with Darlene waiting in the getaway car. What a rush!
Mr. Robot is delivering some incredible episodes with each passing week, and “Method Not Allowed” was a reminder of what we’ll be missing when all is said and done. Who knew an episode of silence would speak so loudly?
