Undone has been renewed by Amazon Prime! Did Alma reset the timeline? Is Jacob alive? Did anyone else die? Let’s discuss the news and the possibilities!

Per a report from Deadline, Undone has been renewed for a second season on Amazon Prime! It’s accompanied by the news that series co-creator Kate Purdy (BoJack Horseman) has signed an exclusive overall deal with Amazon. This is great news! Purdy created and wrote more than half of the first season along with Raphael Bob-Waksberg (BoJack Horseman). All eight season one episodes were directed by Hisko Hulsing (Montage of Heck), who utilized rotoscoping to transport real-life characters across alternate realities and timelines.

Undone is my favorite show of 2019. The melding of real actors with animation and rich oil paintings was transformative for the story. It was a more simple and elegant alternative to CGI that genuinely took me along on an emotional, cosmic ride. The cast is led by Rosa Salazar (Alita: Battle Angel, Brand New Cherry Flavor) who plays Alma Winograd-Diaz. She was profoundly affected by her father Jacob’s (Bob Odenkirk) death on a mysterious Halloween night when she was a kid. Alma’s world is turned upside down when she’s in a car accident that may or may not have been caused by Jacob from beyond.

Over eight episodes, Alma begins to communicate with Jacob and learns how to walk between time and realities. She becomes obsessed with trying to change the timeline and save Jacob. But keeping her tethered to one reality is her sister Becca (Angelique Cabral), her mom Camila (Constance Marie), and her loving, yet super clingy boyfriend Sam (Siddharth Dhananjay).

Rosa Salazar gave an Emmy worthy performance. She rules. Alma doesn’t know if she’s truly gifted or losing her grip on reality. But she’s committed to finding out which is which. And, if that means she can save her dad along the way, it’s worth all the effort. I felt the confusion and confidence in Alma through Rosa Salazar’s performance. She would use her whole body to bring that across. Whether it was rhythmic dancing, quick-crouched walking, or craning herself into a full-body squint to try to figure out what the hell was happening, I could feel that Alma was going through some stuff.

Bob Odenkirk and Constance Marie really shined in their roles, as well. There’s a point where Jacob learns an ugly truther about himself. His reaction to it is devastating, yet ultimately redeeming. It’s the moment where he really becomes Alma’s dad. We also learn that Camila lives life by strict, soul-sucking rules because things that have happened to her family sucked a lot of her soul out already.

I recapped all eight episodes. You can check out my season one review here. In it, I speculated on whether or not we needed a season two of Undone. Of course, I want one. But the show did end on a hopeful, yet ambiguous note. Either Alma was about to come face to face with a fully alive Jacob or she was about to return home with Becca and seek psychiatric help. Either way, the sun’s rays started to wash over Alma’s face and I felt like she was going to be okay. Her beloved dad would be alive. Or, she would love the family she still had.

Now that there is a season two, I need to know if Alma altered the timeline. Did it bring Jacob back? Did he die, anyway? Did other members of her family die? Does Alma retain the same consciousness while living a different life? One of the central themes of season one was how Alma was crushed by the banal repetition of her everyday life. She was stuck in a loop playing a role that bored her. But, what if she’s thrust into something completely different? My mind goes to dark places like being incarcerated, or having to be a prosecutor, or the most dangerous game of all, having an office job.

Alma is all soul, so if her timeline alteration hurts her family in any way, season two could revolve around her and Jacob trying to put things back they way they were. But what would that mean? I don’t know how much Alma’s brain can take, but she always seems to be on a collision course to being hospitalized.

One of the best aspects of Undone was its exploration of mental health. Schizophrenia was thought run in the Winograd side of the family. Alma’s paternal grandmother and Jacob were thought to be schizophrenic. But Jacob believed that was a misperception of gifted people like shamans who could see across time and realities. Alma was the person who questioned her own mental health the hardest, even though she threw herself into helping her dad. It was a much more personal mission for her. Any type of reality with her dad alive was a better one. Unless it turns out that it isn’t in season two. That would be heartbreaking.

Like I mentioned in my review, if season two starts with Alma sedated in a hospital undergoing treatment, I’ll just start crying. I mean, I’m still going to binge the crap out of Undone season two whenever it hits Amazon Prime. I trust Purdy, Bob-Waksberg, and Salazar to make the story transformational, emotional, and exciting no matter which direction they take it. Like, when does production start? How’s that writer’s room cooking? We got a teaser trailer? Nothing but love for this absolute treasure of a show.

Are you happy that Undone is getting a second season? What would you like to see happen? Let’s discuss in the comments!
