Netflix has revealed the premiere date for the graphic novel adaptation of Locke and Key. Get ready for more spooky horror starting early next year.

After nearly a decade of production hell, it looks like the Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series Locke and Key is finally set to hit screens. Netflix has announced the show’s release date will be February 7, 2020, and we also have a sneak peek at some of the creepiness we’re likely to witness on screen.

Starring Jackson Robert Scott, Connor Jessup and Emilia Jones as Bode, Tyler and Kinsey Locke respectively, and Darby Stanchfield as their mother, Nina, the first season of Locke and Key will be 10 episodes long. The show follows the Locke family as they deal with grief and mystery in their ancestral home, Keyhouse. Unbeknownst to the family, an evil creature lurks in the shadows wanting to get its hands on a set of magical keys.

The graphic novel series was created by writer Joe Hill and artist Gabriel Rodriguez, in the early 2000s and there have been several attempts to adapt the series for the screen. Netflix is the first to succeed. The series takes place across two timelines – the tragic present in which the Locke children come to terms with their new circumstances, and the past that informs the histories of the characters in the story.

The books were undoubtedly arresting for both their story and art, but there were some problematic elements that we can assume the showrunners have chosen to either eschew or to address with sensitivity.

Given the accomplishment of Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House, there’s no doubt that the showrunners and executive producers will accurately depict the melancholic sorrow and horror of the Locke and Key graphic novels. But, the key (pardon the pun) to the show succeeding will be how well the powers of each key are translated to live-action. Both Hill and Rodriguez have said that the showrunners tried their best to use the panels from the books as direct inspiration for the show, which raises expectations for fans and viewers alike.
