6. Emergence (ABC)

I think the Cancel Bear was being a bit generous when it came to Emergence.

The Bear — my go-to for cancel/renewal predictions — gave the mystery-thriller a likely chance to be canceled in 2020, but from what I’ve seen, Emergence is basically a lock to be one-and-done when the fall season wraps up in May.

For starters, this season has simply not been kind to new shows. Most new shows across all the networks (sans The CW) are pretty much in danger of being canceled in May. None of the shows have stood out, and networks may feel it would be more cost-saving to just cut their losses than to take a chance on a show that has little chance of expanding its viewer base.

That is definitely the case for Emergence.

The show, which follows the mysterious events of a girl who reappears after being missing, has found a hardcore fanbase, but has yet to expand outside of that, nor become the breakout that ABC may have expected from the series. That leaves Emergence in serious limbo, too good to not be axed, but ratings not good enough for ABC to really commit to a Season Two.

If ABC does ax Emergence — and we think it will — then there is a high probability the network will just shop the show to another network or to Netflix or Hulu. Much like CBS’s All Rise (which faces a similar fate), that may be the best course for Emergence to take.
