8. The Rookie (ABC)

Is it me, or is it weird seeing Nathan Fillion as anyone other than Richard Castle?

It just doesn’t look natural to see Fillion as a rookie LAPD officer in a more traditional police procedural, and this may be one of the reasons as to why ABC execs are on the fence as to whether or not to bring this drama back for a third season.

The Rookie had a fine-enough freshman campaign to where ABC took a flier on Season Two, but the show’s ratings haven’t really improved all that much, and with its viewership falling flat, The Rookie now looks to be treading water, hoping and praying that ABC will greenlight the show for another season.

The critical response around The Rookie is also a bit problematic, as many critics have praised Fillion’s “reliable likability” while at the same time, panning the lack of originality of the series as a whole. It seems like in Season Two, with each passing episode, those critiques are being proven more-and-more accurate in their assessment of The Rookie, and with the breakout of The Good Doctor and American Housewife, there may not be any need for The Rookie to stay on the schedule.

Anything is possible, but our money is leaning The Rookie getting its walking papers in 2020.
