Netflix’s Virgin River renewed for season two
Netflix has announced that Virgin River has been renewed for a second season, set to premiere sometime in 2020.
Netflix’s hit new romance series Virgin River has been renewed for a second season, which comes as a relief to fans hoping for solutions to a dramatic cliffhanger-filled finale. The series follows a big-city nurse named Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) who moves from Los Angeles to a remote town called Virgin River. There she faces new challenges while trying to forge a new start after experiencing personal trauma. She meets and strikes up a romance with local bar owner Jack (Martin Henderson), gains the respect of the town’s stubborn old-fashioned doctor (Tim Matheson), and befriends Virgin River’s busybody mayor (Annette O’Toole).
Virgin River has been renewed for another 10-episode season, matching the first season’s episode count. The series is based on the popular Harlequin novels by Robyn Carr which boasts more than 20 books in the collection. Famed romance novelist Danielle Steel has tweeted her appreciation of the Netflix adaptation, so you know it’s legit.
Fans of shows like The CW’s Hart of Dixie will love Virgin River, especially considering the two shows have actor Tim Matheson in common and playing pretty much the same character. And while the premise is familiar enough and the plot twists predictable, the characters and relationships remain compelling and the storyline watchably juicy. It’s just a cute, bingeable, easy-watching show.
Season one ended with Mel deciding to leave Virgin River after dramatic complications in her new romance with Jack and with the possible kidnapping of a woman and her son on the run from her abusive ex-husband. All the main cast are set to return, including Lauren Hammersley, Jenny Cooper, Colin Lawrence, and Daniel Gillies. Sue Tenney returns as showrunner with Jocelyn Freid, Roma Roth, and Christopher E. Perry joining her as executive producers. Virgin River will return sometime in 2020.
