Hulu’s Reprisal has an incredible cast but is this noir revenge thriller worth checking out?

The latest original series from Hulu hits the ground running and immediately sets the tone for the entire series. Reprisal isn’t interested in pulling any punches and it makes it clear this revenge thriller is going to center on revenge. Viewers are introduced right away to the shocking moment which will send Katherine Harlow (Abigail Spencer) on the pursuit of vengeance and why it has consumed her entire life.

Warning: Spoilers for Reprisal season 1 will be discussed below!

Two things stand out the most in the series: just how stylish it is and the remarkable cast. Abigail Spencer leads the series, once again proving she can not only lead her own show but can slip into any character with ease. Katherine, or Doris Quinn depending on the timeline, is a far cry from her previous roles on Timeless and Rectify. She manages to keep herself meek and unopposing to the people around her, but Doris has moments where she shows just how much is going on beneath the surface. She’s cultivated this kind-hearted housewife to slowly build up the plan of vengeance she hopes to enact on her brother.

Rodrigo Santoro, who plays Joel Kelly, also does a fantastic job taking on the role of the second in command of the Brawlers. In fact, he’s so good it’s hard not to hope he gets to take on the full-time leadership position throughout the series.

For those who are interested in style and direction, Reprisal has no shortage of gorgeous scenes. The series really digs into its noir roots, especially the scenes at the 707 club. Plenty of the Banished Brawler gang moments also seem to pay homages to classic films before meanwhile, many of the fight scenes are equally well directed.

So is it worth watching? The show has a similar feel to Cinemax’s Banshee and for those looking for some pulpy and gritty fun will certainly enjoy it. However, for those looking for something light-hearted and fun, Reprisal is definitely not the show to check out. The storyline is a bit thin, but overall, it’s an entertaining series to watch.
