Even before the show has premiered, Star Trek: Picard showrunners have announced that it will return for a sophomore season.
Less than two weeks before the premiere of the highly anticipated Star Trek: Picard, CBS All Access announced that the show has been renewed for a second season. The return of Sir Patrick Stewart as the iconic character Captain Jean-Luc Picard has reached fever pitch with every announcement, and now fans have more reason to rejoice now that the show will be continuing for more than one season. Sir Patrick has not donned the Starfleet uniform since Star Trek: Nemesis, the final film for the Star Trek: The Next Generation cast, released back in 2002.
At the Television Critics Association presentation, Julie McNamara, Executive Vice President, Original Content, CBS All Access said:
"The energy and excitement around the premiere of Star Trek: Picard has reached a magnitude greater than all of us at CBS All Access could have hoped for."
Trekkies are excited for the return of many fan-favorite Star Trek: The Next Generation characters, including Brent Spiner’s Data, Jonathan Frakes’ William Riker and Marina Sirtis’ Deanna Troi and Jonathan Del Arco, who played the liberated Borg drone Hugh. Alongside these stalwarts, Jeri Ryan appears as her beloved Star Trek: Voyager character, Seven of Nine.
Could more Star Trek veterans appear in the second season of the show? It’s almost a surprise that characters like LeVar Burton’s Geordi La Forge, Michael Dorn’s Worf, Wil Wheaton’s Wesley Crusher and Gates McFadden’s Dr. Beverly Crusher haven’t been added to the cast. Dr. Crusher and Picard had a long-running unrequited romance that ran throughout The Next Generation and the films. Perhaps the first season of Star Trek: Picard will address how their relationship turned out.
As per Deadline, there is no news on when the second season will air, but one can expect there will be a year-long gap between seasons. Star Trek: Picard follows the next chapter in the life of the Enterprise captain with Picard having retired from Starfleet and returned to his family vineyard. The show is expected to be more cerebral, and has a host of new characters joining the Trek universe.
Star Trek: Picard airs in the US on CBS All Access on January 23.
