10 Netflix originals to leap into this February
Queen Sono: Season One – February 28
While Black History Month at Netflix seems a little lacking in color this year, there is this cool looking feminist spy series out of South Africa that looks super awesome. Queen Sono is Netflix’s first series from South Africa. Although Shadow, also South African, was released first, Queen Sono was technically the first to be commissioned. The series follows a badass secret agent as she balances fighting crime while maintaining a personal life.
Pearl Thusi, who plays the lead, feels very strongly about this project and tweeted an emotional video, saying she “cannot wait for…every woman on this continent, and actually on this planet, to meet Queen Sono.” Based on the trailer, it looks equal parts gritty and stylish, filled with action, drama, and humor. The key art definitely brings to mind all the strong black women from the blaxploitation days – actors like Pam Grier and Tamara Dobson. It is also a pleasure to see Khathu Ramabulana, who played Max in Shadow, also plays a part in Queen Sono.
Babylon Berlin: Season 3 – February 28
Babylon Berlin, the huge period production out of Germany, markets itself as a crime thriller, but in reality has a deeper purpose coursing through the undertones of the story: to trace the origins of Nazism in Weimar Republic era Germany. While the series is concerned with an entertaining and compelling mystery on the surface, it aims to recognize the exact combination of factors that allowed Hitler to rise to power and to pinpoint the signs of Fascism. Season three takes place in 1929 during the chaos preceding the Black Friday stock market crash and a mere four years before Hitler was appointed Chancellor in 1933.
As unfortunate as it is, this is a topic that is extremely timely and important in our current political climate. It seems we could all use a little reminder regarding the lessons of our past and Babylon Berlin knows how to draw us in with a story and trick us into startling revelations. They remind us that Nazis aren’t always the evil mindless strangers in uniform, but that they can be our family or friends. One of the pressing questions addressed by the series is: “How can a liberal society fall to the forces of autocracy?”
