Is the Lizzie McGuire sequel doomed?

It seemed like all was well with the Disney+ sequel of Lizzie McGuire, but now the series has hit a rough spot. Deadline reports that star Hilary Duff wants to see the series moved to Hulu in order to explore more mature themes. However, it seems like the streaming service is dragging its feet about giving up the series.

When Disney+ launched, it was promised to be a family-friendly service. With this in mind, the Love, Simon sequelLove, Victor, and High Fidelity were both moved to Hulu so they could explore more mature themes. Now, Hilary Duff is calling for the same thing to happen to her Lizzie McGuire sequel as Disney seems to have hit a creative roadblock with their direction for the series.

It isn’t just Duff who has had problems with Disney. She posted an Instagram note today detailing her reasoning behind the desire to move the series. However, Terri Minsky, the original creator and showrunner for the sequel, exited the show back in January. This already spelled trouble for the series but Disney+ promised that the show was still very much happening.

The sequel would’ve featured a thirty-year-old Lizzie and her life in New York City. It sounds like Disney was looking for something that could appeal to all ages or be something former fans could watch with their families like Girl Meets World or Raven’s Home. However, since many original fans probably are somewhere between their twenties and thirties, it might make more sense to have the sequel appeal directly to them with a Hulu series.
