The Protector: Season 3 – March 6

This Turkish supernatural drama initially drew comparisons to Marvel’s Iron Fist series, but seeing as how it’s managed to outlive Iron Fist, it seems that The Protector has something more going for it. The series follows a young man named Hakan who gains supernatural powers from a talismanic shirt and discovers his purpose is to protect the city of Istanbul from the Immortals.

It certainly sounds about as corny as Iron Fist was, but the trailer makes it look less comic-booky and has a darker and more dramatic tone. Anyway, at the end of season two, a deadly virus was unleashed across the city, leaving Hakan and his allies to search for a cure and keep the Immortals from conquering Istanbul. The bottom line is that if you liked Iron Fist, you’ll probably like this.

On My Block: Season 3 – March 11

Netflix is doing a lot to expand its base of Latinx shows, but On My Block is more than that. It may tell the coming-of-age story of teens growing up in South Central L.A., but showrunners have found that the series resonates with teens all over the world. Creator Eddie Gonzalez said:

"“What really surprised me is when we would have these DMs on Twitter coming from kids in India, or Brazil, or the U.K., and they’re saying something about how they see themselves in Jamal or Ruby. I thought it would connect with kids in the inner city, I thought it would connect with a lot of different people — but not to that extent.”"

That level of universal resonance says two things: first, that as humans we all experience some similar things regardless of culture or race, and second, that the series and its characters comes from a place of honesty. If you want to know what’s coming in season three, the big theme seems to be that some characters are really going to come into their own, for better or worse.
