The Valhalla Murders: Season 1 – March 13

This is Netflix’s first Icelandic series, which already ticks two of my boxes, but sweetens the deal by being a mystery crime thriller about Iceland’s first known serial killer. Now, being American and being morbidly well versed in the history of American serial killers, this originally led me to believe that this series must also be an Icelandic period drama, but no. Historically, Iceland has only had one known serial killer who was active during the late 1500s.

Seeing as how the series follows a police profiler transferred home from Copenhagen to investigate the case, I think we can safely revise this premise to say first known modern (fictional) serial killer. I have to say, it is astounding to me that Iceland has only had one known serial killer. What a magical unicorn of a place! And the same goes for this series. I love Scandinavian crime thrillers because there’s something so dark, complex, and aesthetically pleasing about them. I’m a fan of minimalism in life and in art and there’s something in Scandinavian thrillers that cuts straight to the essential. This is definitely at the top of my watchlist this month.
