Thanks to the success of The Witcher, more video games are on track to get TV adaptations. Here’s why we think Horizon Zero Dawn should be next.

On the heels of The Witcher‘s success at Netflix, HBO recently announced that they are planning to adapt The Last of Us into a television series.  I got to thinking about what other video games would make excellent television and a big one popped out at me: Horizon Zero Dawn.

If you haven’t played Horizon Zero Dawn yet, you’re missing out. It’s an incredible RPG, and its story is one of the best in recent years. It would easily lend itself to an episodic format.

My only concern would be the network that picked it up; I don’t want to see the show on the broadcast channels. I would hope for something like Netflix or HBO, maybe even Starz — who is gearing toward female-led content, which is perfect considering Aloy is a fantastic protagonist.

For those unfamiliar with the storyline of Horizon Zero Dawn, it follows a young woman named Aloy, who sets out on a journey to learn about her past in a world overrun by machines. I don’t want to reveal too much because it is such an amazing story, you’ll want to experience it firsthand — trust me.

I will say, however, that I believe a television series would need to utilize dual timelines or a dual narrative.

Not necessarily straight off the bat, but later on in the show, it would be helpful for us to get insight on the past events that lead to the current state of the world in the Horizon Zero Dawn universe.

I know that multiple timelines proved to be problematic with The Witcher, but I think it would be much more straight-forward in the case of Horizon. Even if we just got a solid extra-long flashback episode, that might suffice.

Either way, I think Horizon Zero Dawn deserves more attention than it gets, at least from mainstream audiences. I’m still hoping we get an official sequel announcement any day now. But a television show? I can’t think of a game that deserves one more right now.
