The Szápárys put their plan in motion

The episode begins with Sophia and Viktor in their home. Sophia looks at an old newspaper clipping about an 8-year-old Fleur who “mystified Versailles.” They used her for a long time, and Fleur’s talents led to the Szaparys exile from Paris.

Viktor is happy, and he could care less about Fleur, whose future he believes was “predetermined.” Sophia at least has the decency to be upset about everything that has happened. Viktor reminds her of their purpose, “revenge at all costs,” against the Imperial Army for everything they’ve suffered, and for Hungary. To them, Fleur is nothing but a weapon.

Later in the episode, the Szápárys set up a curse in the yard. The couple buries a human skull and some other delightful items into the ground. One of which includes SOPHIA’S HAIR? I had no idea she was wearing a wig.
It sounds like their plan of revenge will go into action at the Peoples’ Ball.

It also sounds like the Szápárys do not intend to make it out alive after their curse unfolds. The final shot is of the Szápárys boarding a carriage, with Sophia wearing the red wig Fleur saw in her vision.

Odds & Ends

  • What was the point of Georg killing Steffi, Leopold kidnapping Clara, or the Mucha murders? What did the Szápárys gain from their deaths? Was it just a way to draw out Táltos? A lot of the plot points on this show don’t make a lick of sense but it is sure fun to watch.
  • How does Szpilman’s ghost play into all of this?

Season 1 of Freud is currently available to stream on Netflix.
