4. Black Sails

Black Sails is kind of like Game of Thrones or Vikings if they were about pirates. It is one of the only substantial pirate-themed shows out there and it’s very well-made and surprisingly underrated.

The series is set as a prequel to the classic novel, Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stevenson. Captain Flint is the main character. Flint is a renowned pirate and one of the most legendary in the Golden Age. Flint is trying to help New Providence Island in the face of devastation and threats from Britain and Spain, he begins to work alongside Eleanor Guthrie, who is the daughter of the local kingpin.

However, it won’t be easy for Flint and his crew, especially with new and surprising enemies popping up all the time. Another great asset to Black Sails is its diverse cast and array of LGBTQ+ characters.

3. Spartacus

Spartacus ran for three seasons and Starz also ordered an additional prequel miniseries. The series was inspired by the real historical figure named Spartacus, a gladiator that led a massive slave uprising against the Roman Republic.

The first season, titled Blood and Sand, focused on the events of his early life leading up to the major historical accounts. The prequel revolved around the character of Gannicus and featured many characters returning from the other seasons.

Following the prequel, there were two more official seasons of the show titled Vengeance and War of the Damned. The show is full of exactly what you would expect, blood, sex, madness, and more. It has beautiful actors and scenery and is sure to engage fans of period dramas.
