4. The Valhalla Murders

The Valhalla Murders is an eight-episode Icelandic crime drama that follows a veteran cop who begins hunting down a serial killer. Several people are found viciously murdered across Iceland. Initially, it doesn’t seem like their deaths are related, except that each of them contains a sinister post-mortem trademark of the killer.

Kata, who was recently denied a promotion, seeks a way to prove herself as she takes on the case and discovers a photograph from a boys’ school named Valhalla that may just prove to be the key to solving the string of murders. The Valhalla Murders is available to stream on Netflix. Like Freud, The Valhalla Murders is based on a real story (in the loosest of terms), that occurred in 1940s Iceland.

3. The Alienist

The Alienist is another period drama based on the book of the same name written by Caleb Carr. Also, like some of the other series on this list, The Alienist revolves around a group of people trying to find a serial killer responsible for the brutal murders of multiple children.

The Alienist is one of many shows like Freud that incorporates fact into its fiction. Historical figures like Theodore Roosevelt have a place in the story. Daniel Brühl, Luke Evans, and Dakota Fanning star, and will return for the second season of the show, which is based on Carr’s second novel, The Angel of Darkness.

The first season is available to stream on international Netflix, or you can watch it with ads on the TNT app. It can also be borrowed from your local library on the Hoopla app.
