2. The Mire

The Mire is a Polish original series on Netflix that revolves around a string of murdered prostitutes. It takes place in the 1980s in your typical quiet small town where “nothing ever happens.” The police are very friendly with each other, and the town inhabitants are happy and harmonious.

But all of that changes when a brutally murdered sex worker is discovered in the woods. At first, it looks like a rare one-off, but then more deaths come to light. A young editor latches on to the case and becomes determined to solve it. It features an odd-couple dynamic between the editor and an older cop.

The dialogue is fresh and snappy, it’s a fun watch and not quite as self-serious as some of the others on this list. The Mire is available to stream on Netflix.

1. Penny Dreadful

Out of all of the series on this list, Penny Dreadful might be the best option when seeking out shows like Freud. Fleur Salomé and Vanessa Ives are very similar characters; they even look similar. Both women struggle to control another entity residing inside of them.

Both shows also revolve around dangerous characters and mysterious murders; they also lean heavily into the occult and the usage of seances. However, Penny Dreadful is far more overt in its supernatural elements. The series features witches, monsters, werewolves, vampires, and more.

The characters are drawn from the public domain, so you’ll see popular literary icons like Dracula, Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde, Dorian Gray, and more. It is a psychological thriller set in Victorian London. It’s addicting and the performances are exemplary.

If you enjoy the show, you can even tune in to the upcoming spin-off series, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels. The original three seasons are currently streaming on the Showtime app and Netflix.
