Motherland: Fort Salem Season 1, Episode 4 Recap: Hail Beltane
By Maria Alicia
With the boys at Fort Salem for Beltane, the death of Porter, and The Spree moving in, tensions are beginning to mount in Motherland: Fort Salem.
In the previous episode of Motherland: Fort Salem, Raelle tried to use her powers to save Porter but ended weakening herself. She is now waking up in the infirmary with Anacostia standing over her. After Anacostia tells Raelle how proud she is, Raelle tells her that she is having visions and can feel what Porter was feeling. She knows that he was afraid and that he did not want to die. Will she find out Scylia was involved? Could this mean trouble in paradise?
Anacostia goes to General Adler about Raelle’s visions. Adler says that they should cancel Beltane, but others say that Beltane is needed to keep up spirits. Beltane is a holiday ball where the women of Fort Salem get to heal and gather energy from their male counterparts. Adler asks if they can wake Porter in order to talk to him about his untimely death. Adler also suggests that this may mean that The Spree might already be on campus. Well, yea, ya think?
After leaving the infirmary Raelle ends up back with Scylla and starts asking a lot of questions. Raelle suggests that it is their relationship that literally put Porter over the edge. Scylla starts to fish if Porter was able to tell Raelle anything before he died and then of course … lies to her.

Finally, all three girls, Abigail, Tally, and Raelle, are reunited and talking about Beltane. Abigail and Tally are all about the event and want to celebrate, meanwhile, Raelle is apprehensive to attend but is happy to go if the others want to.
Over in Necro school, Scylla is being told that they are going to open up a death current in order to speak to Porter. We can tell the chill from the morgue has her shaking in her shoes. Will she be exposed?
Adler is tending to all of the leaders and has tasked her head of defense to only focus on The Spree. Only, guess who is the head of defense? Abigail’s mother, Petra Bellweather, and she is every bit of fierce we would have assumed from meeting Abigail.
The girls enter training with the boys. Tally is given her scorch whip from Gerit and is definitely feeling his energy. Meanwhile, When Raelle begins to channel her energy, she ends up getting more visions from the night Porter died. So she excuses herself from practice and goes to find Scylla. But her vision becomes quite foggy. She is following the same steps that Porter did, but we know where this leads can’t be good.
The girls have made it to Beltane. Abigail tries to give Raelle a pep talk because she knows she doesn’t want to be there. Tally has her eyes set on Gerit, but it looks like Gerit may have his eyes on other women. Tally is reassured the dance will work out the way it is supposed to, but she does not take that lightly.
Raelle starts talking to one of Porter’s friends who confirms her suspicion about Porter not being depressed and told her that Porter had been looking forward to Beltane all week. Raelle immediately confronts Scylla and confesses about her visions. Scylla FINALLY admits to seeing him that night but asks Raelle not to look any further. Could Scylla actually have feelings for Raelle or is this more of The Spree’s antics?
At Beltane, the girls are to commence in a dance where they are supposed to let the music find them a mate for the night. Tally, feeling betrayed by Gerit, is getting around to all of the available men. We don’t think Gerit is completely happy with this outcome, and he isn’t because he gets the girl!
Elsewhere, Scylla is sneaking into the morgue to tamper with the temperature so they can’t perform the witchcraft to speak to Porter. But was she too late, was her effort enough? Or will they find out the truth about Scylla?
While the rest of the unit is getting their Beltane on, Raelle confides in Porter’s friend. Raelle is asking for vague advice and is basically asking if she should forgive Scylla? Do we think she should? No. Will she probably? Yes.
The death current is about to be opened to talk to Porter. It works and Porter is awake but is feeding them lies. How did this happen? Did The Spree have something more to do with this? Will Scylla be able to get away with it for much longer or will Raelle’s visions get her first?
The girls are on their way back from Beltane and Abigail has asked the girls to attend her cousin’s wedding, as a unit. Who is waiting for them once they return? Scylla! And, she has more lies to feed Raelle. Raelle buys them hook, line, and sinker! We just can’t!
Before the boys leave, Raelle is handed the scorch Porter made. Could this help Raelle feel closer to him? Abigail is already practicing with hers at training and Raelle and Tally join her.
Scylla returns to her dorm room to find Raelle. But Raelle is in training, so who is this? It is not Raelle. It is The Spree telling her that she has messed up too many times. They finally give her an ultimatum to make it to the Bellwether wedding.
Will Scylla get herself invited to the wedding? What will her mission be once she is there? Are the girls in trouble or will they figure it out? What actually happens at a witch wedding?
I guess we will all have to tune in next week to Motherland: Fort Salem on Freeform next Wednesday at 9/8c to find out!
