Castlevania season 3, episode 5 recap: A Seat of Civilisation and Refinement
By Wade Wainio
In episode 305 of the Netflix series Castlevania, Saint Germain tells us about the infinite corridor and Sumi and Taka continue their training.
Previously on Castlevania, Sumi (Rila Fukushima) and Taka (Toru Uchikado) told us about the villainous vampire named Cho. Also, we got a glimpse of satanic philosophy, courtesy of Sala (Navid Negahban). Episode 5 is relatively quiet. In fact, not a single character (good or evil) seems to be killed off, which is pretty rare for Castlevania.
In fact, it may have never happened before. Anyway, amidst the indistinct chatter of crowds, Trevor Belmont (Richard Armitage) breaks off into the woods where he gets introspective about his relationship with Sypha (Alejandra Reynoso).
While he’s not against their adventures together, he questions if he’s let his guard down. The Judge (Jason Isaacs) approaches him, who also seems to be a solitary figure. He expresses his own philosophy, including bits of wisdom like, “You can’t be part of a town and also rule it.” The Judge also notes a symbol carved in wood, and it appears to be a satanic symbol from the night creatures, who were loyal to Dracula (Graham McTavish).
There’s something in the basement

While Trevor and The Judge are hanging out, Saint Germain (Bill Nighy) finds a glowing rock as he explores the priory. Sala chides him for going downstairs toward the basement. Germain insists he was merely looking for a place to urinate, leading Sala to insist he must do so outside.
When Germain gets outside, he talks to Sypha. The two end up discussing the bad magic that has taken over in the priory. Also, like Trevor and The Judge, they see the symbol of the night creature.
Sypha and Saint Germain have a little tension between them when they head to the tavern. Sypha even says she could kill him just by looking at him. However, this tension breaks a little when he mentions an infinite corridor, or a route to many other worlds, including possibly Hell itself. Germain relates that he lost someone in the infinite corridor, maintaining that there’s such a portal to it in the priory
Vampire trains vampire hunters
While not the most action-packed Castlevania episode, there is some training highlighted between Alucard (James Callis), Sumi and Taka. It must be somewhat awkward, though, for Alucard to be so consistently involved in anti-vampire activities.
He is half-vampire, after all. Still, his human half surely keeps him from becoming too much like his father. This episode lacks flashbacks to Cho, but it does demonstrate that these two are very much committed to a disciplined vengeance (at least so far in the series).
For better or worse, there’s never a moment where the two hunters seem like they could beat Alucard in a fight, implying they’re not quite at Belmont’s level. Still, the two could prove reliable in another vampire vs. humans confrontation, which seems to be imminent.
