Never Have I Ever, the Mindy Kaling-created teen comedy, has released a new laugh riot trailer. We have all the details.

Netflix is bringing a ton of hilarity and relatability to viewers this month with Never Have I Ever, a nerdy teen comedy created by Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher.

And viewers can get a glimpse of what to expect from the show in the recently-released trailer, which is packed with humor, friendship, and teenage rebellion.

Billed as a coming-of-age story, Never Have I Ever follows Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), a first-generation Indian-American teenager who tries to navigate high school, her burgeoning desires, and her family.

Taking inspiration from Kaling’s experiences, the show is set to give viewers a new perspective on teen comedies. Not only does it feature an Indian-American character—who is being played by an Indian-American actor—in a leading role, but it will also explore the all-American high school setting from the point of view of a high-achieving nerd.

High school dramas and comedies are known for their cliques—which many have said don’t actually represent real school life.

The nerd character is often played by a straight white boy who is a ‘good guy’ and ends the story having won the affection of the love interest of a jock. It is refreshing to see the trope turned on its head not only in terms of gender but also with regard to ethnicity.

What makes the characterizations of Never Have I Ever even more exciting is that Devi’s friends are also women-of-colour—an African-American and an Asian-American. One hopes that they will be given arcs of their own to expand the universe of the show.

One of the primary storylines that the new trailer of Never Have I Ever highlights is Devi’s high school crush and how she attempts to win his attention, and his affections. It will be interesting to see how this particular plot pans out and whether the showrunners plan to do something subversive with it.
