12. House of Cards

The reputation of House of Cards is somewhat tarnished now due to disgraced actor Kevin Spacey, but before that, it was considered one of the best television shows around. House of Cards helped Netflix launch its digital streaming catalog into the stratosphere.

Not many people even know that it was based on a 1990 BBC series of the same name. The British series was top-rated and acclaimed by critics, but it was only a 4-episode miniseries.

The Netflix series obviously lengthened the format and created a much more colorful, and thrilling, storyline. It was nominated for — and won — numerous awards throughout its six-season run.

11. In Treatment

In Treatment is an acclaimed HBO series based on a successful Israeli series called BeTipul. One of the creators of the original show served as an executive producer on In Treatment, which might explain why it was such a strong adaptation.

It had a unique approach, in that each episode was a session between one client and the psychotherapist Dr. Paul Weston. A new episode aired every day of the week throughout the season, with each day delegated to a particular patient as if we were really privy to a genuine therapy session.

The Israeli series was critically acclaimed too, and the series received several adaptations in multiple countries. Both series were phenomenal but In Treatment truly delivered every single episode. The performances and unique formula pushed the HBO show to a new level.
