4. Shameless

The American remake of the British series has completely overshadowed its predecessor. Shameless is about to air its eleventh and final season, and our televisions won’t be the same without the Gallaghers every week.

Each show had a similar premise, following the dysfunctional and lower-class family of kids produced by alcoholic Frank Gallagher, but the U.S. version managed to add a lot more heart and emotion to the series than its U.K. counterpart.

It still has plenty of comedic moments, most of them very dark, but it isn’t as crass as the British show. It balances out the comedy and drama much better, to the point where some people have even argued over its Emmy categorization (of which it has received numerous nominations).

3. Wentworth

Wentworth is sorely underrated, which is a shame because it is a gritty, thrilling, and binge-worthy series on par with many of today’s most popular television shows. By the time it comes to an end in 2021, the series will have produced nine seasons.

The show is a reimagining of the soap opera, Prisoner, which also took place in a woman’s prison. But Wentworth is a nice change of pace given that it allows its female characters to be antagonistic and unlikable without all the camp present in the original soap.
