The Outer Limits, and 5 classic sci-fi TV shows that deserve a reboot

4. Farscape
Every ’90s kid watched Farscape at some point—it was the non-Star Trek show that filled in the sci-fi gap in TV programming.
Farscape follows a motley crew from around space and time as they try to make their way home while avoiding capture by a powerful peacekeeping force. Led by a time-displaced Earthling, the crew is made up of eccentric beings who don’t quite get along—until they have to.
If you loved Firefly in the early 2000s, you would probably love Farscape—it had similar concepts, with less disguised misogyny. But it definitely would need an update for the third decade of the 21st century—the effects and makeup weren’t always up to scratch, and the plots bordered on cringe at times.
But it’s definitely reboot material—a sci-fi show like Farscape, that’s a bit edgy and dark, would be perfect for new audiences.
All four seasons of Farscape are streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
3. Quantum Leap
Time travel is all the rage now—The Flash is the subject of so many time travel-related memes, and even the plot of Avengers: Endgame hinged on the concept. But way back in 1989, Quantum Leap was the definitive time travel show, becoming a cult classic that fans still can’t get enough of.
Before he donned the captain’s pins aboard the Starship Enterprise, Scott Bakula was Dr. Sam Beckett, a physicist who experimented with time travel technology. Beckett’s project doesn’t go as planned, sending him into the bodies of random people to right the wrongs done to them and others.
What made Quantum Leap unique was how it combined social commentary with sci-fi—which is exactly what makes shows great in the 21st century. Escapist entertainment will only get you so far—everybody loves a good plot but if the stories represent the trials and tribulations of modern life, even better.
Quantum Leap can be rebooted to make more poignant remarks about the state of the world right now with more representative characters and stories—and definitely a more diverse cast of actors.
All seasons of Quantum Leap are available for purchase on Google Play.
