Appeal for Help

Annalise is in dire straits. When Teagan points out that Annalise is being hunted for being successful, Annalise looks suitably impressed – maybe by Teagan’s fire, her faith in Annalise, or that Teagan makes a persuasive argument. Teagan’s tirade gives Annalise an idea.

She holds a mini-press conference where she clearly states that the DOJ is after her because she’s a successful black woman attempting to give a voice to the voiceless innocents in prison.

I’m so glad the showrunners doubled down on this statement because the conspiracy against Annalise certainly feels like it is motivated by systemic racism. We don’t know for sure if that’s the real reason, but racism is what it looks like.

As frivolous and entertaining as this show is, How to Get Away with Murder is always more powerful when it taps into real-world issues.

The press conference is only one step. Annalise requests Nate to testify on her behalf in exchange for confronting Xavier – now that we know Nate got his wish, will he hold up his end of the bargain? Annalise also turns to Michaela and Connor. Both of them are dying of guilt for falsely accusing Annalise and thereby leading her to her death.

When she pushes them to come clean about being the informants for the FBI, Connor unleashes their wild card. He recorded Gabriel accusing Pollack of killing Asher. With this information, the DOJ’s case against Annalise will have to be thrown out. Easier said than done, however. Annalise can’t throw Gabriel under the bus, even if it’s to save her life. What other option does she have?

Hearing the press conference, the DOJ is ready to hear an appeal for Annalise’s life. Teagan is very convincing, but it looks like an uphill battle. Annalise then takes matters into her own hands. She recorded Michaela and Connor saying that Special Agent Lanford (William R. Moses) of the FBI coerced them into accusing Annalise and that they have evidence of the FBI being involved in Asher’s death. Once this recording is out, the DOJ changes its intent – there’ll be no death penalty for Annalise’s case.

But we can’t celebrate yet on How to Get Away with Murder. Lanford confronts Michaela and Connor over telling Annalise that he coerced them into a confession. And when Annalise returns home, she finds Vivian waiting for her and ready to reveal some new truth about Sam Keating and his sister Hannah.
