4. Lady Maria Grey and Charles Pope get to know each other better.
Lady Caroline’s party served as a veritable breeding ground for inappropriate relationships. Maria Grey and Charles Pope continue their flirtation in this episode after meeting up in the gardens. Being seen with Charles isn’t entirely proper because Maria is already promised to John Bellasis. Nevertheless, she clearly enjoys talking to him.
Maria accompanies him on his walk back to his offices, eager to learn more about his business and investments. At the end of their stroll, Maria lets it slip she is engaged, Charles is visibly disappointed.
3. Lady Caroline plans to invest in Charles Pope’s company.
The relationship between Lady Caroline and Charles deepens in this episode as she decides to invest in his company. Charles is, of course, over the moon. Now he’ll be able to go to India and refinance his company, get his cotton mill up and running once again.
Stephen Trenchard happens to spot the two of them together in the private tea room. Charles is already on everyone’s radar since his appearance at the dinner party. No one understands what a middle-class businessman is doing with members of high society, particularly a family as renowned as the Brocklehursts.
Everyone knows there is more to Charles than meets the eye, but can’t quite put their finger on what is so special about him. When news of Caroline’s decision to invest gets around Belgravia, antennas go on high alert.
Charles’ presence in Belgravia is also causing a rift to grow between James and his son Oliver. Oliver has always been a source of disappointment for John. In this episode, he goes out on a limb to get Oliver employed on the Isle of Dogs project, but his son isn’t as receptive to the idea as he’d hoped.
To make matters worse, Oliver happens to stumble upon his father and James having lunch at the prestigious Athenaeum Club, a place James has only just barely gotten accepted as a member. Oliver throws a very public fit as Charles awkwardly leaves the father and son to their dispute.
He has become threatened by Charles’ appearance in his life. For James, Charles is the son he always wanted, which is a hard pill to swallow for his actual son, Oliver.
