Belgravia Season 1, Episode 3 recap: 5 important developments

2. Stephen Trenchard is in serious debt.

Good ‘ol Rev. Stephen Trenchard is apparently a degenerate gambler, explaining why he always needs his brothers’ funds to line his pockets. In Episode 3 of Belgravia, he sports a bloody face. Stephen explains his scuff marks as the result of standing too close to a shattered window. In reality, he is 1,000 pounds in debt to a fellow gambler.

He only has two days to get the money he needs to repay his debts, or else something much worse will happen to him than getting a little roughed up. His first option is his brother, the Earl of Brockenhurst. Peregrine turns Stephen down. He has paid for many of his debts, and he’s tired of bankrolling his brother’s vices.

Well, Stephen doesn’t have any other options. He consults with John. The two try and brainstorm ideas with John, suggesting his father ask for money from a Polish man he knows. Stephen tells John he saw Caroline and Charles meeting and wonders if he shouldn’t do some digging to get intel he could use to blackmail the Brockenhurts for money.

1. John digs into the Trenchards secrets.

John begins plying the Trenchard servants with money in exchange for information after his father informs him of the meeting he witnessed between Caroline and Charles. Both as a means to aid his father and potentially gain intel that could put him in a commanding position, John asks Speer where he might learn more secrets from the Trenchard home.

Speer advises John to speak with Turton, the butler. The episode ends with the two having a clandestine meeting in which John propositions Turton. It seems it will only be a matter of time before the truth of Charles’ lineage gets out.
