10. Homeland

Homeland is another series that just recently ended. The long-running show won numerous Emmy Awards during its run, particularly for its star, Claire Danes, who plays CIA agent Carrie Mathison.

The series begins with Marine Sgt. Nicholas Brody returning home after being held in captivity for eight years. Carrie firmly believes that Brody was turned while overseas and thinks he might be used in a planned terror plot in the United States. She attempts to prove her beliefs, but it is much harder than she could ever have imagined.

Carrie’s story arc is at the heart of Homeland, and things change drastically from where she begins to where she ends up. But Homeland always remains thrilling. It’s the type of show that will have you on the edge of your seat.

9. Penny Dreadful

When I say Penny Dreadful, I do not mean the recent spin-off series Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, which is nothing like the original.

The original Penny Dreadful starred Eva Green in one of her career-best roles, and it was a neo-Victorian gothic featuring numerous characters from classic literature such as Dracula, Dorian Gray, Dr. Frankenstein, and his creature, Jekyll and Hyde, and much more.

Penny Dreadful brought those characters to life in a much darker light. Plus, the original actually had something to do with “penny dreadfuls,” a term used to describe a type of cheap literature from the 19th century, which added an air of deliciously fun campiness to the show.
