Tiger King: Nicolas Cage to play Joe Exotic in limited series

Nicolas Cage will play the eccentric Joe Exotic in an upcoming Tiger King limited series from the American Vandal showrunner.

Well, that didn’t take long. A Tiger King limited series is officially in the works, and Nicolas Cage is set to take on the starring role of Joe Exotic, reports Variety.

We don’t yet know what network or streaming service will pick up the rights to the series. However, it would be unfortunate for Netflix if they were outbid since they’re the ones who produced the documentary that recently captivated the world.

According to the article, the series will be produced by CBS TV Studios and Imagine Television Studios. It will reportedly go to market in a few days, and I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a bidding war for the rights to this hot commodity.

Variety says the official series will be based on “Joe Exotic: A Dark Journey Into the World of a Man Gone Wild,” an article written by Leif Reigstad.

Dan Lagana and Paul Young optioned the article to CBS TV Studios. Lagana previously served as the showrunner on Netflix’s other hit show, American Vandal. He will write the new Tiger King series.

For those who haven’t watched the documentary or are unfamiliar with Joe Exotic and his band of misfits, the story will revolve around “Joe Schreibvogel, a.k.a Joe Exotic, an eccentric, exotic zookeeper in Oklahoma who fights to keep his park even at the risk of losing his sanity.”

It sounds like it will be an origin story of sorts, with viewers learning how he became Joe Exotic and immersed himself in the role he created.

Based on the news, it seems as if we’ll soon be swamped with Tiger King content since Rob Lowe is also planning to create his version of the story alongside Ryan Murphy. Recently, Kate McKinnon was cast to play Carole Baskin in a series based on the Wondery podcast Joe Exotic.

This project will be Nicolas Cage’s first television role.
